Standing true to their word, the East Brewton City Council voted to move ahead with demolition of a home damaged by fire two years ago.
The property, located on Forrest Avenue owned by Billy Harris, was “more than 50 percent damaged” in a fire in March 2022, according to records.
“We have put this off and put this off over and over,” Mayor Terry Clark said Monday. “It’s time now to move forward with taking it down.”
Clark told council members about bids that had come in to the city for removal of the dangerous building. With three bids presented, the council unanimously voted to award the bid to Pitts Dozier service at a cost of $12,000.
Harris approached the council in an effort to stall the demolition plans.
“We need more time,” Harris told the council. “I have a contract for help and we can show what has been done. We are still moving stuff out of it. We’ve got some of the winwos out, the back porch is off and the handrails are off the front.”
Clark told Harris that he has had more than a year to take what he wanted from the structure.
“We have let that sit there while other structures were torn down after fires,” Clark told Harris. “Now, it’s time to get this down.”
Following the council’s approval of a bid award, Clark said the work for final demolition of the property would begin immediately.
