In a pair of games this week for the W.S. Neal Lady Eagle softball team, the Lady Eagles took down Cottage Hill in their area opener on Tuesday at home, but lost to the Jay Royals Thursday at home.
On Tuesday, the Lady Eagles improved to 6-4 this season and to 1-0 in area play with a 10-2 win over the Lady Warriors of Cottage Hill. On Thursday, W.S. Neal lost 6-0 to Jay to fall to 6-5 this season.

WSN 10, Cottage Hill 2
W.S. Neal used a seven-run second inning to propel them to a 10-2 area win over Cottage Hill Tuesday.
W.S. Neal scored two runs in the first, seven in the second, and one each in the third, fourth and sixth innings while holding Cottage Hill to two runs in the sixth.
“It is good to get the first one,” Lady Eagle head coach Jeff Haney said. “Our goal is to win the area championship and we are going to have to get win after win to get that. Tonight was a good start. I was not necessarily happy with the way it ended with us up 9-0 after the fourth inning. It should have been over in five innings and I expressed that to my girls. Hopefully we can learn from that and in the future, when we get up big, we can handle that. I am proud to get the win though. Kaitlin (Hadaway) pitched pretty well for most of the game. We had a few hiccups there in the middle and gave up some walks that she shouldn’t have. We hit the ball a little bit and we ran the bases a little better than we had been and our defense was pretty solid. We made a couple of errors, but fewer than in the past. We are improving and it is going to come around.”
Hadaway went the complete game and allowed two runs, struck out 12, walked two and surrendered three hits.
At the plate for W.S. Neal, Kena Ellison led with four singles, Kaeli Brown had a single, and KeKe Floyd had a triple and a single.

Jay 6, WSN 0
Thursday at home against Jay, the Lady Eagles were held scoreless and took a 6-0 defeat to the Lady Royals.
Ellison was 2-for-3 along with Karissa Johnson who had a triple. Hadaway was 1-for-3.
Hadaway took the loss on the mound going seven innings and allowing one walk and struck out seven.
“We played a quality opponent tonight,” Haney said. “Jay hits the ball pretty well and we made a few small mistakes that cost us a few runs. Our biggest problem though was our inability to hit the ball. Their pitching was not overpowering, but we made her look outstanding tonight. We have to find the bats again before next week’s area games.”
The JV Lady Eagles lost 15-0 in three innings. Paige Lowery had the lone hit for W.S. Neal.
