Work on a drainage project near T.R. Miller Mill could begin in a matter of weeks, now that the city has accepted a bid for the work.

City council members on Tuesday accepted a bid from Martin Construction for $420,658.

The work is being funded by the city, the Alabama Department of Transportation and T.R. Miller Mill Co.

City Clerk John Angel said work could begin within the next few weeks, after Martin Construction gets the notice to proceed.

In other business Tuesday:

• The council appointed Jerry Kelly Sr. and Steve Nelson Jr. to fill vacancies on the industrial development board.

• The city agreed to return $62,000 in stimulus funding to the state because a sidewalk project funded by the stimulus program was under budget. Angel said several projects across the state were under budget, and all were asked to give money back to the state.

“It’s just a matter of bureacracy in reducing the funds,” he said.

• Council members set an Aug. 24 public hearing to discuss splitting land left over from the reconfiguration of the U.S. 31 and Old Castleberry Road intersection.

• The council set a public hearing for Aug. 10 for a request for a retail lounge liquor license for Ace of Hearts.
