For little girls who’ve dreamed of living the life of “Alice in Wonderland” or young boys who’ve wanted to play the King of Hearts, Monday may be a dream come true.

The Brewton Council of the Arts is hosting the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of “Alice in Wonderland” next week that will be filled with a cast of Brewton area students.

Madelyn Cave, president for BCA, said this year marks the fourth Missoula production brought to the city.

“Children from area schools have had wonderful opportunities to act, sing, dance and even help direct these fun, family shows,” Cave said.

The auditions will be held beginning at 3:30 p.m. Monday, with plenty of opportunities for area children to become a part of the production.

With 40-50 roles available, students in kindergarten through 12th grade will be given an opportunity to audition for the show and be cast in a role for the performance. Cave said the auditions are just the beginning of a week of fun for everyone involved in the show.

“What is so amazing is that two directors come to town with all of the sets and props ready for show time,” Cave said. “They audition the children, cast the parts, run rehearsals and put on an outstanding performance in one week.”

Rhearsals for the show begin immediately following auditions and casting of roles.

“There are parts for all ages of children,” Cave said. “While it is a lot of fun, there is a lot of hard work and commitment that goes into the production. Parents and students who receive roles must commit to one week of rehearsals after school.”

Many area students have participated in the shows production by MCT. Alissa Harvell, now in seventh grade at Brewton Middle School, has performed in all three of the previous productions. Harvell said her apprehension disappeared once auditions were completed.

“My favorite part was meeting new people and being on stage,” Harvell said. “At first I was nervous and scared, but when I got on stage all the butterflies went away. It was a very fun experience. I’m going to try out again because I loved it.”

Curtis Glaize, a junior at T.R. Miller High School, remembered the opportunity he had in previous productions by MCT, including “Alice in Wonderland.”

“Missoula Children’s Theatre was a lot of fun,” Glaize said. “I don’t remember when I’ve been more excited than right before the start of my first Missoula play. My favorite role was when I played Tweedledee with my friend who was Tweedledum. Everybody should do Missoula theatre. It is a lot of fun and a great way to make new friends.”

Glaize’s mother, Alecia Glaize, was instrumental in bringing the Missoula Children’s Theatre group to the Brewton area. She said the group provides wonderful opportunities for children of all ages and backgrounds.

“MCT provides an opportunity for kids to be on stage with professional, quality actors and actresses and get excellent drama instruction,” Alecia Glaize said. “Most kids are not going to have a career on Broadway, but learning to communicate clearly and present yourself well to an audience are skills that can be used in other arenas such as scholarship and job interviews.”

Auditions will be held in the Woodfin-Patterson Auditorium at Jefferson Davis Community College on Alco Drive.

“Those who plan to audition should be at the auditorium by 3:25 p.m.,” Cave said. “The auditions will be held until 5:30 p.m., and everyone should plan to stay for the full two hours. Some of the cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition.”

Rehearsals will be held from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday, and most of the day on Saturday, Jan. 22. MCT provides directors, costumes, scenery, props and makeup for the production. No advance preparation is necessary for those auditioning.

Roles to be case for the show are three Alices of varying size, Alice’s sister Margaret, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Queen of Hearts, the King of Hearts, the Knave of Hearts, the Cheshire Cats, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Flower Band, Cards and Lobsters.

The performance of Alice in Wonderland will be Saturday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. at Jefferson Davis Community College’s Woodfin-Patterson Auditorium. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults, $5 for students 6 years and older; $1 for children ages 3 to 5 and children under 3 will be admitted free.
