Atmore boys and Flomaton girls win county basketball tourneys

For the second straight year Saturday at W.S. Neal gym in East Brewton, the Flomaton High School Lady Hurricane basketball team and the Escambia County Blue Devil boys team were crowned champions of the 2011 Escambia County basketball tournament.
The Lady Hurricanes went 2-0 in the tournament and defeated T.R. Miller’s Lady Tigers Saturday for the tournament championship while Escambia County’s boys went 2-0 and defeated Flomaton for the boys championship. The win for Atmore was their fourth straight boys championship.
The two-day tournament began Friday in East Brewton with T.R. Miller’s girls defeating Escambia County 20-19 to advance to the championship game Saturday and Flomaton would defeat W.S. Neal’s Lady Eagles 38-22 later in the day.
On Saturday, Atmore defeated W.S. Neal 44-20 to take third place and drop the Lady Eagles to 0-2 and fourth place in the tournament. Flomaton would defeat T.R. Miller 47-31 for the championship.
Flomaton finished 2-0 in the tournament followed by T.R. Miller with a 1-1 record, Escambia County with a 1-1 record and W.S. Neal with an 0-2 record.
In boys action Friday, Atmore defeated T.R. Miller 59-29 and Flomaton defeated W.S. Neal 72-32. In games Saturday, T.R. Miller defeated W.S. Neal 65-24 for third place while Atmore defeated Flomaton 71-41 for the championship. The Blue Devils would finish the tournament 2-0 followed by Flomaton and T.R. Miller at 1-1 and W.S. Neal at 0-2.
Next year’s county tournament is scheduled to be held in Atmore.
Overall this season, the Lady Tigers of T.R. Miller saw their record go to 5-4 while the varsity went to 3-3. For W.S. Neal, the Lady Eagles dropped to 2-6 while the varsity fell to 2-9.
W.S. Neal is scheduled to play at home Tuesday in their first area game of the season against Jackson. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. in East Brewton.
T.R. Miller’s teams will be back in action Friday at Atmore. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

Friday: TRM Lady Tigers 20, Escambia County 19
In the first game of the tournament Friday, the T.R. Miller Lady Tigers edged out the Lady Blue Devils of Escambia County by one point, 20-19.
Leading 16-15 heading into the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers of Brewton took a 20-17 lead with 3:19 left in the game. Those would be the final points of the game for the Lady Tigers as they held on for the win.
With 46 seconds left in the game, Atmore would get a steal and connect for two points to cut the lead to 20-19.
The Lady Blue Devils had their chances to get the win, but missed two shots and the rebound went out of bounds to T.R. Miller with 18 seconds left. Escambia County would get another steal but the ball went out of bounds to the Lady Tigers with 12 seconds left.
After a successful inbounds play for the Lady Tigers, T.R. Miller was forced to call a timeout with nine seconds left, but was able to run the clock out later without attempting any kind of shot.
A deciding factor in the game in the one-point win for the Lady Tigers was the fact that Atmore was 0-for-8 from the free throw line in the loss while the Lady Tigers were 0-2 in the game.
Escambia County took an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter and led T.R. Miller 6-4 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, the Lady Tigers went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-6 lead with 3:09 left to play. From there, Atmore would end the quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 11-10 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Lady Tigers outscored Atmore 6-4 to take a 16-15 lead. Both teams would score four points each in the fourth quarter as the Lady Tigers earned the win.
LaTeysia Montgomery and Leah Brundidge led T.R. Miller with eight points each in the win and Taylor Guthrie added four points in the win.

Friday: Escambia County 59, TRM varsity Tigers 29
Facing off against eventual tournament champion Friday in their first game of the tournament, the T.R. Miller varsity Tigers lost to the Blue Devils by 30 points, 59-29.
After Escambia County took an early 1-0 lead with 7:23 left in the first quarter, the Tigers held their only lead of the game, 2-1, at the 6:55 mark.
With the Tigers leading 2-1, the Blue Devils would go on a 10-0 run later in the quarter to take an 11-2 lead with 3:55 left and hold a 19-6 lead after one quarter of play.
The Blue Devils would follow up their 10-0 run in the first with an 8-0 run in the second quarter and outscore T.R. Miller 22-11 in the quarter to lead 41-17 at the half.
In the third, Atmore would outscore T.R. Miller 10-7 to claim a 51-24 heading into the fourth. In the fourth, Atmore would edge out the Tigers 8-5 to get the 30-point win.
T.R. Miller shot 5-for-15 from the free throw line while Atmore was 5-for-10.
Leading T.R. Miller in the loss was Kameron Winn with 10 points and Caleb Dickey added five along with Abdiel Arauz. Jaquan Dewberry chipped in four points in the loss while Darrion Salter had three points and Mark Bryant added two.

Friday: Flomaton 38, WSN Lady Eagles 22
The W.S. Neal Lady Eagles opened up their 2011 Escambia County Tournament play with a 38-22 loss to the champion Flomaton Lady Hurricanes.
Flomaton started the game out on a 5-0 run over the Lady Eagles and ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 14-4 after the first quarter of play.
In the second, the Lady Eagles were held to only two points while Flomaton ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to hold a 24-6 lead at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Lady Eagles showed signs of life as they had an 8-0 rally to outscore Flomaton 12-8 to cut the lead to 32-18 heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Flomaton edged out W.S. Neal 6-4 to get the win by 16 points.
W.S. Neal was 2-for-6 from the free throw line while Flomaton was 5-for-15.
KeKe Floyd led the Lady Eagles with 11 points while Tiana Smith had five points. Jasmine Crook, Arianna Joes and Courtney Emmons all had four points in the loss for the Lady Eagles.

Friday: Flomaton 72, WSN varsity Eagles 32
It took the Eagles of W.S. Neal two seconds into the game to claim an early 2-0 lead over Flomaton, but that lead was short-lived as Flomaton used a 20-0 run to end the quarter to help aid them in a 40-point win over the Eagles, 72-32.
After the 2-0 lead for the Eagles to start the game, Flomaton used a 20-2 run in the quarter to lead the Eagles by 18 points after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, both teams scored eight points each as the Hurricanes went into halftime with a 28-10 lead.
In the third quarter, the Hurricanes used a 10-0 run to take a 43-15 lead with 2:10 left to play in the quarter. The Hurricanes would outscore the Eagles 20-11 in the fourth to extend their lead to 27 points heading into the fourth quarter, 48-21.
In the fourth, the Hurricanes would use a 9-0 run and an 8-0 run later in the quarter to outscore the Eagles 24-11 to get the 40-point win.
W.S. Neal shot 3-for-6 from the free throw line in the loss while Flomaton was 12-for-21.
Josiah Nettles led W.S. Neal with nine points and Trevor Burns added eight. Derrick Hodges and Jalen Harrod had four points each. Malcolm Hawthorne added three points in the loss while Nick Straiton and TyShawn Davis had two points each.

Saturday: Escambia County 44, WSN Lady Eagles 20
The offensive struggles for the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles continued Saturday as they finished the tournament 0-2 with a 44-20 loss to Escambia County.
The Lady Eagles were held to four total points in the first half in the loss. Atmore started the game on a 6-0 run and ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 13-2 after the first quarter of play.
In the second quarter, the Lady Blue Devils outscored the Lady Eagles 8-2 to take a 21-4 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, W.S. Neal was outscored 9-4 as Atmore increased their lead to 30-8 heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Eagles hit double-digits with 6:39 left in the game, but was outscored 14-12 in the final quarter to take the 24-point loss.
W.S. Neal shot 4-for-11 from the free throw line in the loss while Atmore was 2-for-15.
Floyd led W.S. Neal with five points and Glenasia Butler and Smith had four points each. Jones, Emmons and Crook all had two points while Khadijah Barton had one point.

Saturday: TRM varsity Tigers 65, WSN varsity Eagles 24
The T.R. Miller Tigers picked up their first win in the tournament while dropping W.S. Neal to 0-2 in the consolation game Saturday as the Tigers defeated the Eagles 65-24.
The Tigers used a 10-0 run in the first quarter along with a 7-0 run and another 10-0 run in the second quarter to help get the win. Leading 48-20 in the fourth quarter, the Tigers had a 17-0 run to ice the game to get the 41-point win.
The Tigers outscored W.S. Neal 12-3 in the first quarter and 17-6 in the second to hold a 29-9 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the Tigers increased their lead by eight points as they outscored W.S. Neal 17-9 to hold a 46-18 lead heading into the fourth.
In the fourth, T.R. Miller outscored W.S. Neal 19-6 for the win.
The Tigers were 11-for-22 from the free throw line in the win while W.S. Neal was 2-for-11.
The Tigers had three players in double figures as Bryant and Winn led with 14 points and Dewberry added 10.
Salter had seven points and David Barragan and Marc Edge both had six each. Arauz added five points and Caleb Dickey chipped in three points in the win.
For the Eagles of East Brewton, Harrod led with six points and Nettles had five points. Donovan Millican chipped in four points while Hudson Brown had three. Straiton, Trevor Burns, and Hawthorne all had two points each.

Saturday: Flomaton 47, TRM Lady Tigers 31
Having already lost to Flomaton earlier in the regular season in Flomaton, the Lady Tigers looked to avenge the loss Saturday in the championship game of the tournament, but Flomaton made it two straight over the Tigers this year for their second straight county championship with a 47-31 win over the Lady Tigers.
In the first quarter, T.R. Miller took a 7-4 lead over Flomaton before being outscored 4-0 to end the quarter with an 8-7 lead in favor of the Hurricanes.
In the second quarter, Flomaton outscored T.R. Miller 12-9 to claim a four-point lead at the half, 20-16.
In the second half, Flomaton outscored T.R. Miller 27-15 to get the win by 16 points.
Flomaton outscored T.R. Miller 11-7 in the third quarter and 16-8 in the fourth. Flomaton had a 6-0 run in both quarters and led by as much as 18 points with 3:01 left to play in the game.
T.R. Miller shot 2-for-5 from the free throw line while Flomaton was 8-for-16.
Brundidge led T.R. Miller with 12 points and Montgomery had 11.
Shakera Nicholson had four points and Morgan Rowell and Guthrie had two points each.
