Small town gives big news

Thirty years ago, in 1987, The Brewton Standard reported that a new business, “29 and Holding had opened downtown. It was offering quality clothing at a reasonable price.

Now I don’t even remember this one. It may be that I wasn’t looking or it didn’t last long.

Mary Beth Brantley of Atmore was selected to become the Junior Miss from Escambia County.

Bill and Mary Grissett celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.

There was a photograph in the newspaper showing a set of triplets all dressed up for a picture that ran in The Birmingham News. The babies’ mother was Bridget Beasley. The babies were beautiful and I guess, by the clothes they wore, there were two girls and one boy.

One person was arrested after an airplane flying over spotted the marijuana field. There were 2,201 plants found in the eastern part of the county.

A Brewton man was arrested in a federal crackdown where he was running an illegal gambling place.

Fall football practice was up and running at T.R. Miller High School.

I saw an ad in the newspaper that reported that there was a Western Sizzlin’ to open on U.S. 31 south of town.

I think I remember this one, but it didn’t stay too long.

Time was running out on two men on death row and it seems they couldn’t get a lawyer to defend them and speak for them  in their appeals.

Buck Farrior was named county agent.

An “accelerant” liquid was found at the scene of a blaze at Keego. A 54 year-old woman in a wheelchair was killed in that fire. There was an ongoing investigation.
