With just a few days remaining in the 2003 United Way fundraising drive, the local board of directors feels optimistic that they will be able to celebrate the conclusion to a successful campaign this Friday.
Last year the United Way of Brewton and East Brewton wrote checks totalling $71,000 to 13 agencies based in Brewton or that offer services in our area.
When a donation comes in to the United Way, it is deposited in a local bank until the spring, when checks are written directly to agencies that have applied for funding.
This year's goal of $80,000 was set in the spring after the local board received funding requests from 14 local agencies.
This year the local United Way will helpl fund programs and services at the American Red Cross, East Escambia County Chapter; Brewton Area YMCA; Brewton Parks and Recreation Dept.; Escambia County Mental Health Association; Boy Scouts, Gulf Coast Council; Girl Scouts, Deep South Council; East Brewton Youth Sports; Southwest Alabama Mental Health/Mental Retardation Board; Escambia County Cooperative Library System; Alabama Cooperative Extension System; Disabled Children and Adults, Brewton Chapter; Salvation Army; Christiian Community Benevolent Fund and Brewton Public Library.
Although this year's fundraising campaign officially ends on Friday, donations will be accepted after that date andwill be included in the allocations to be made in 2003. Donations may be mailed to P.O. Box 34, Brewton, AL 36427.
The board is also accepting nominations for new members at the same address.
