Public forums were important step
Recently, the Escambia County Board of Education completed a series of public forums to address concerns and get feedback from citizens regarding the funding crisis within the system. It is obvious that proration and loss of local revenues over the past few years is taking a toll.
Superintendent Melvin "Buck" Powell and all those with the system made the right decision in holding these public forums. Not only did they provide school officials an opportunity to inform the public on the status of the system, but it also gave citizens a chance to voice their concerns and offer suggestions.
In our view, regardless of how we feel about a tax increase or school spending, these public forums were an important step in resolving the funding crisis. Hopefully, this effort will lead to more public participation in the future.
