Despite questions about how a statewide Sept. 9 tax reform vote will impact their finances, both the Brewton City Schools and Escambia County Board of Education will hold public budget hearings in August.
According to Lynn Smith, superintendent of the Brewton City Schools, there will not be hard figures available at the public hearings, but the board will be prepared to discuss teacher units and programs.
Julie Madden with the County BOE said that the hearings would take place, but that the board would not actually approve its budget until its September meeting, after the tax vote.
Brewton's budget will also be approved at its September meeting, after the vote.
Normally, school budgets are due before to the state dept. of education in August, but with the outcome of the vote likely to have a major impact on school budgets, this year they are not due until Oct. 15.
The Brewton City Schools will hold its public hearings on Monday, Aug. 4 and Monday, Aug. 18, at 5 p.m. at the Board of Education building at 811 Belleville Avenue.
The County BOE will set its public hearing dates at its July 31 board meeting. They are tenatively set for late August.
According to both systems, the public is invited to the meetings and comments pertaining to the budgets of the schools will be taken by the boards.
