Every year Brewton takes part in Earth Day with a citywide cleanup. What we are not able to participate in annually is Miss Alabama's homecoming reception.
This year is different, though, as one of our own has won the crown of Miss Alabama. Catherine Crosby will be making her return to Brewton, the first since winning the title last month. Although her schedule is largely filled with official events, at 4 p.m. there will be a public reception at The Ritz where family, friends and acquaintences will be able to congratulate Catherine, have their picture taken with her and get her autograph.
The reception is sure to draw a lot of attention, some of it from around the state. To make sure that Brewton puts its best foot forward, a group of people is setting aside time this Thursday to clean up around the downtown area. They will be pulling weeds, washing windows, sweeping sidewalks and much more. The board of directors from the Chamber of Commerce is even getting in on the action, volunteering to help.
A visit from Miss Alabama is a special occasion for a town our size, and it will be an opportunity for us to show the state what a special town Brewton really is. Cleaning up downtown is a great first step, and hopefully others around town will follow the lead and clean up each part of our city.
The group effort is also a positive sign for Brewton, and is an indication of the good that can come when people decide to work together for a single, good cause.
