Helping to build the American Dream

On Sunday, Habitat for Humanity officially completed its seventh house in the Brewton area, when it turned the keys over to new homeowner Angela Bell. And plans are already underway for the next home, which will be built next door to Bell's, on Underwood Street.
Habitat for Humanity is an organization that builds and remodels homes and then turns around and sells them to someone in the community. There is a family selection committee that reviews the applications, checking not only for need, but also for an ability to pay for the home.
Habitat requires new homeowners to pay a monthly mortgage, but in addition, there is what's called a 'sweat equity' investment. They are required to work on their own homes and encouraged to volunteer on future homes. As members of Habitat like to say, "it's not a handout, but a hand up."
Sunday's ceremony marked the realization of another family's dream. Home ownership is a dream for many, and our local Habitat for Humanity board of directors and volunteers are hard at work to make those dreams a reality.
