Basketball is a game of five-on-five. For the T.R. Miller Lady Tigers, it might as well be three.
Those three would consist of Joy McCorvey, Ashley Samuel, and Keonshaye Lane. This trio of ladies scored 39 of their team's 50 points. That figure was two points better than their opponents scored, as T.R. Miller beat the host Andalusia Lady Bulldogs Friday night 50-37.
McCorvey served as the leading scorer for the Lady Tigers, as she racked up 15 points followed closely by Samuel with 14 and Lane with 10.
Andalusia got on the board first with a field goal at the 6:46 mark in the first quarter, but Lane put T.R. Miller up by a point when she hit a three-pointer. The Lady Tigers never looked back and outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-6 in the
first quarter and 28-19 at the half.
Both teams came out cold in the second half. Only 12 points were scored in the third period, as the Lady Tigers held an 8-4 advantage. Despite the slow quarter, the Lady Tigers increased their lead to 36-23.
Both teams each scored 14 points in the final quarter, as T.R. Miller won 50-37.
Even though his team won by a good margin, T.R. Miller coach Ron Jackson saw the need to improve.
"We've got to get much better," Jackson said.
The Lady Tigers (3-1) open up play in the Escambia County Tournament Thursday when they take on Escambia County at 3:30 p.m.
T.R. Miller will face tournament host W.S. Neal Friday at 6:30 p.m. and conclude the tournament Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. game against Flomaton.
