Brewton's traffic situation, already confounding at times, stands to get a bit worse beginning this Sunday when work to the Mildred Street railroad crossing gets underway. The crossing, just across the street from the Message Center as one heads from Brewton toward East Brewton, is located at an intersection which sees about 24,000 vehicles pass through each day.
That's an amazing number of cars and trucks for a small city intersection, but it's true. At times, the traffic count at this point has rivaled the numbers on I-65.
The work to the crossing is being done as part of a project to rehabilitate crossings throughout the city, replacing both timbers and rails. At each crossing where work is being done, an inconvenience is created for motorists and for homeowners who live in the area surrounding the crossings. The Mildred Street crossing, however, with its high traffic volume and central location, presents a special kind of challenge as its worked on.
Work on this intersection will last until next Friday. While it's ongoing, we encourage everyone to exercise patience, and drive safely.
