Elder Burt Franklin Phillips Sr., 80, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at his residence. He was a disabled veteran of World War II and retired from Liberty National Life Insurance Company. He was an ordained minister of the Primitive Baptist faith and for over 50 years served as pastor of Pine Level Church, Atmore; Mt. Pisgah Church, Frisco City; Pleasant Home, Pensacola and Hopewell Church in Milton. He was preceded in death by his half-sisters, Clara Hall of Port Arthur, Texas, Grace Weaver and Hattie Hardy, both of Atmore and a brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Mildred Phillips of Atmore.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Faye Coon Phillips; two daughters, Phyllis P. Crawford of Brewton and Beverly P. Blackwell of Mobile; one son, Burl F. Phillips Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren and many other family and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 19, at 4 p.m. at Pine Level Primitive Baptist Church of Atmore with Elder John Rice, Elder Henry McLain and Elder Fralick officiating. Burial followed at Pine Level Cemetery with Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Joe Phillips, Bill Phillips, Hoyt Mack, Buford Coon, Gene Freeland and Thomas Fraliek. Honorary pallbearers were Eulie Bryant, James Digman, Willard Dunn, Louie Hardy and Clarence Weaver.
