The Alabama Home Builders Foundation recently awarded $26,000 in scholarships to 43 students -- two of which are Brewton natives.
Marcus Woods, son of Hubert Woods, was awarded a $500 scholarship.
Woods is a student at W.S. Neal High School and Escambia-Brewton Career/Technical Center and plans to study masonry.
McDavid Woodson, son of Ken and Jackie Woodson, is a student of Reid State Technical College and a graduate of T.R. Miller High School. He also received a $500 scholarship and is studying building construction.
The scholarships are for qualified Alabama students intending to study the building trades at technical, two-year or four-year schools in the state.
An arm of the Home Builders Association of Alabama, the Alabama Home Builders Foundation was established in 1995 to provide scholarships and grants for educational research and scientific projects that enhance the quality and availability of residential housing for Alabama citizens. In 1997, the Foundation began awarding scholarships to men and women who wish to pursue careers in the home building industry.
With a lack of trained, qualified laborers in the home building industry, the Foundation is working not only to attract new people to the building industry, but also to assist them in getting the tools and training they need in order to be successful.
To apply for an Alabama Home Builders Foundation scholarship, you must be a resident of Alabama; enrolled in or attending a junior college, technical school or university in Alabama; and you must be enrolled in a construction-related curriculum.
