In less than two weeks, Lisa Thomas of Brewton will begin a journey unlike any she's undertaken before.
On the morning of April 29, Thomas plans to begin walking the 110-mile stretch between Brewton and Montgomery to draw attention to the plight of the elderly and the poor. She will carry with her a letter to the Governor requesting more state funding for these issues.
Thomas founded Carlisa -- a non-profit organization that provides food and necessities to the poor and elderly -- in 2000, and this new crusade is an extension of her desire to help in that way.
The trip will be sponsored by both private and public donations. Donors may make pledges for each mile walked or may donate a specific amount toward the fund-raising effort.
Thomas hopes to raise $5,000 to $10,000.
Thomas said she's been walking more and has lost 15 pounds in preparation for walking the planned route along Highway 31 between here and Montgomery.
