Plans are underway for this year's spring carnival to benefit the T.R. Miller Quarterback Club.
The carnival, put on by Andalusia's All-American Show, will be held at Burnt Corn Creek Park Tuesday, May 4 through Saturday, May 8.
On behalf of the Quarterback Club, Roger Chapman, the club's president-elect, acquired permission from the Brewton City Council last Tuesday to hold the carnival on city property.
For more than a decade, the T.R. Miller Quarterback Club has brought a carnival to Brewton to raise funds to benefit the school's athletic program. With a few thousand attendees at the carnival every year, the club earns about $3,000 to $4,000 to support athletics.
Quarterback Club funds are used to pay for equipment, lodging, meals and other sports-related costs that are not covered by the school. All teams at T.R. Miller -- golf, softball, basketball, track and others -- benefit the funds.
The Brewton City Council has recently formed a committee to develop some guidelines for planning carnivals within the city limits.
Some suggestions from the committee, according to council member Dennis Dunaway, will include requiring organizations to go through an application process through the city clerk's office at least one month prior to the event.
Permits could be limited to non-profit groups, Dunaway said, and the committee may suggest limiting the number of carnivals that can be held each year on city property.
Chapman agrees that a limited number of events like this can work in a community the size of Brewton.
The city council's committee on carnival guidelines will meet with the Brewton Tree and Beautification Committee to discuss what factors need to be considered in caring for the park.
Once the committee has determined what guidelines need to be in place, it will present those guidelines to the city council for a vote.
After the spring carnival, the T.R. Miller Quarterback Club's next event will be its sports banquet on May 6 to honor achievement in spring sports.
