Board's new policies would improve reading

At its meeting Thursday, the Escambia County School Board considered two grading and promotion policy changes that will affect grades one through six.
The new policy, an effort to bring policies in line with No Child Left Behind, would make passing reading a requirement for promotion. A related policy change makes spelling 20 percent of a student's language arts grade rather than a grade on its own.
The policy changes were tabled for 30 days and will be voted on at a later meeting.
