Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks baseball recruit Cory Middleton is expected to sign with the Detroit Tigers after he was drafted by that organization in Monday's major league baseball amateur draft.
Middleton, a shortstop from Escambia (Fla.) High School, was taken in the the 10th round and 283rd overall. Middleton batted .450 this spring and led the Penscaola area in homeruns with 13.
Middleton told the Pensacola News Journal Thursday he planned to skip college and sign with the Tigers contingent on reaching a deal.
"I'm just hoping for a fair deal. The quicker I get there (professional baseball), the faster I can go up," Middleton said.
The news of Middleton's expected signing causes a mixed bag of feelings for JDCC coach Jim Morrill.
"It's obviously great for Cory. He is probably looking at a pretty good signing bonus at being drafted that high," Morrill said. "At the same time he would look very good in a JDCC uniform. Even without Cory, I still feel we have a pretty good recruiting class for next season."
