Sasser is first female elected in Brewton

Ann Marie Sasser became the first female elected official in the City of Brewton Tuesday, defeating District 1 City Council incumbent Dennis Dunaway in municipal elections.
Sasser collected 274 votes to Dunaway's 250 votes.
In District 5, incumbent Mervin Huff will face challenger and former Councilman Henry Uptagraft in a Sept. 14 run-off. Huff received 85 votes to Uptagraft's 83, while challenger Fred Barton collected 61 votes.
Voters returned both Councilman Cary Barton and Councilman Jake Lewis to the council.
Barton, the District 3 councilman, defeated challenger Homer Hamilton, 193 to 63.
Lewis, the District 4 councilman, defeated challenger Lawrence V. Jolly Sr., 110 to 54.
Mayor Ted Jennings and District 2 Councilman Frank Cotten were unopposed in their bids for re-election.
