Area athletes land spots on Academic All-State Team

Although the 2004-05 school year is now underway, 11 area high school student athletes have received an important set of awards for the 2003-04 school year.
Those 11 athletes were named to the Birmingham News Class 3A All-State Academic Team. Student athletes had to maintain a 3.70 grade point average to be selected to the team.
T.R. Miller girls named to the squad and their respective sports last year included Jamie Peacock (softball), Rebekah Neal (volleyball, softball) and Ashley Samuel (basketball). W.S. Neal girls on the team included Timiya Nolan (basketball, track) and Abbie Howard (volleyball, softball, track).
T.R. Miller boys who received the All-State honor included James McCracken (track) and Ryan Holland (baseball). W.S. Neal boys on the team included Brett Chancery (football, basketball, tennis), Marcus Folmar (football, basketball), Drew Hester (basketball) and Daniel Hodge (baseball).
Chancery, Folmar, Holland, Howard, Neal, Nolan, Peacock and Samuel were seniors, while Hodge, McCracken and Hester were juniors.

Lavon White won the latest stage of the Brewton Bassmasters Tournament held at Upper Bryants Landing.
White caught five fish that weighed a total of 14.2 pounds. He also had the lunker at 4.04 pounds.
Sammy Thomas took second place with five fish for a weight of 13.19 pounds. J.W. Hager came in third place with five fish at 9.61 pounds.
For the season, White holds the total weight lead with 52 fish for 100.32 pounds. Danny Parker is second with 43 fish at 90.89 pounds. Sammy Thomas is third with 44 fish at 79.56 pounds. Brian Moye is fourth with 41 fish at 79.51 pounds and Dale Westmoreland is fifth with 44 fish at 78.32 pounds.
The rest of the top 10 includes Travis Glidden in sixth place with 34 fish at 67.93 pounds, Lance Youngblood in seventh place with 35 fish at 65.26 pounds, J.W. Hager in eighth place with 31 fish at 60.87 pounds, Jim Burnham in ninth place with 32 fish at 59.64 pounds and Timmy Thomas in 10th place with 37 fish at 58.88 pounds.
The Fishers of Men Introductory Tournament will be held September 25 at Upper Bryants Landing.
There will be a pre-tournament meeting at Shiloh Baptist Church in Saraland on September 24 at 6 p.m.
Hotdogs and hamburgers will be served. Door prizes and blastoff position will be drawn for each team present.
All participants must be at
the pre-tournament meeting. Entry fee is $80 per team.
