Former University of Alabama and T.R. Miller Tiger football great Walter Lewis will be back in Brewton Thursday when he participates in the First Annual Walter Lewis Scholarship Golf Tournament.
The event is sponsored by the Escambia County chapter of the University of Alabama National Alumni Association and will be held at the Country Club of Brewton. Registration will be held at 11 a.m. with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
Lewis, a 1980 graduate of T.R. Miller, starred as a quarterback with the Tigers and later with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Lewis still ranks in the top five in most season and career passing categories at Alabama.
Lewis later played five years of professional football, which included two seasons with the Memphis Showboats of the now defunct United States Football League, one season with Montreal in the Canadian Football League and two seasons with the New England Patriots in the National Football League.
Lewis, who now works with a banking firm in Birmingham that structures bonds, is looking forward to both the upcoming golf tournament and the trip home.
Lewis, who also played baseball, basketball and track at T.R. Miller, admits he is just a recreational golfer.
While Lewis has not donned a T.R. Miller football uniform in 25 years, he said he still keeps a close eye on his alma mater.
Registration fee for the event is $75 per player or $300 for a four-man team.
