Brewton police officer charged with sex abuse

A 21-year-veteran of the Brewton Police Department has been indicted by the Escambia County Grand Jury on charges of sexual abuse, first degree.
Sgt. Michael Smith, 49, of Thomas Road, was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the charges. He was released from the Escambia County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond.
David Lovelace, Brewton Police Chief, said that Smith came to him and reported the incident.
