Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation has made a $25,000 contribution to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to help with recovery efforts for victims of the recent hurricanes that stormed across the southeast. The contribution will help meet urgent needs for housing, food, rental assistance, and medical care.
While many areas were hit hard by the hurricanes, the Brewton area was impacted more than most as a result of Hurricane Ivan. Smurfit-Stone's containerboard mill in Brewton is one of the region's largest employers with more than 600 employees.
The Brewton mill safely resumed production relatively rapidly following Hurricane Ivan, thanks to the efforts of its employees who had to balance work with the major clean-up efforts in their communities.
