This week in 1954, The Brewton Standard reported:
Board, contractors squabble over plaster cracks at the hospital
Cracks in the plaster near expansion joints in McMillan Memorial Hospital are causing trouble for the hospital board and the building contractors, Bell and Williams. At its meeting yesterday, the board heard a letter from the contractors asking for $2,962.02. The board has not paid the contractors because the contractors have not fixed the cracks.
Clean-Up Week termed success
Progress was made in Brewton toward cleaning up the city during Clean-Up Week, according to Johnny Jones, civic improvement chairman. The Clean-Up Campaign was sponsored by the Brewton Lions club.
Franklin Fuqua named champion corn grower
The champion corn grower in the East Brewton FFA Chapter is Franklin Fuqua, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Fuqua. Despite the dry weather this year young Fuqua made 42.3 bushels of corn per acre on his corn project.
