Escambia County this week received a $15,000 state grant with which to increase security in the jail.
Sheriff Grover Smith said Tuesday the grant monies will be used to purchase digital cameras to be used in the jail.
Smith said the cameras increase security for the inmates and staff, preventing escapes and locating contraband.
In announcing the grant, Gov. Bob Riley said, "This grant will enable corrections officers in Escambia County to better monitor inmates and maintain order. I am pleased to provide these funds to improve security and safety at the detention facility."
Riley awarded the grant from funds made available to the state through a program of the U.S. Department of Justice. It will be administered through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA).
Local matching funds of $1,666 will supplement the grant for the purchase.
