Brewton Utilities officials are encouraging area residents to avoid swimming or fishing in Murder Creek south of the Cook Road sewerage plant until further notice, following a sewage spill this week.
Utilities superintendent Ray Madden said Tuesday the problem is the result of a sewer force main rupture on Sunday night. Madden said city workers thought they had stopped the leak Sunday night, but found additional problems on Monday. The leaking line was closed about 10 p.m. Monday.
Madden said the utility department is working with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) to monitor levels of contamination in the creek.
