It may be a new year, but many of the things that plagued the W.S. Neal Blue Eagles in the 2004 portion of their schedule jumped up and bit them again in their 2005 debut Friday when they were bounced 59-25 by the host Clarke County Bulldogs.
"We continued to play hard and there were some areas where we played better, but the bottom line is we've had trouble scoring all season. Twenty-five points won't win many games," W.S. Neal coach David McCollum said.
One area that has hurt W.S. Neal's offense most of the season has been at the free throw line. The Blue Eagles were just six-for-21 (29 percent) for the game. That figure included a two-for-16 effort (13) percent) in the first half.
"We were only down 21-12 at halftime, but we could have easily been ahead if we had shot better from the free throw line. Three of those 14 missed free three throws in the first half were the front end of one-and-ones," McCollum said.
The bottom dropped out on W.S. Neal (2-12 overall, 0-2 in Class 3A Area 1) in the second half. Clarke County (8-7 overall, 2-1 in Area 1) went on a 16-5 run in the third quarter that extended its lead to 37-17 and finished a 20-8 scoring edge in the fourth quarter.
B.J. McMillian led the Blue Eagles with eight points.
W.S. Neal's junior varsity dropped its 2005 debut, as it fell to Clarke County 59-41.
Johnathan Alexander led the Blue Eagles (4-4) with 12 points.
W.S. Neal hosts T.R. Miller Tuesday with a 5 p.m. junior varsity starting time.
