Barring something unexpected between now and the start of the spring sports season, golf is not likely to be a part of this year's W.S. Neal High School sports curriculum.
The main reason behind the school's decision is a lack of interest by students.
There were warning signs last year that W.S. Neal might reach this point. The program began last season with six players, but for various reasons W.S. Neal played most of its matches without the required minimum four players for a team score. W.S. Neal finished the season with three players for its Section Meet. Those players had to compete as individuals.
While the door has always been open, only one girl has played golf at W.S. Neal since the program began five years ago. That lone girl was Ellis' daughter, Karen Ellis.

Ellis indicated W.S. Neal's probable decision to cancel this year's golf season is on a one-year basis.

Smothers said W.S. Neal is also looking to use the exhibition date as a permanent home date.
At this time no team or teams have been lined up for next season's exhibition date.
The renewal of T.R. Miller's football series against Jay (Fla.) is currently on hold.
T.R. Miller and Jay began its series in 2003 with a game at Jay. Last season's game was cancelled after the Alabama High School Athletic Association rescheduled the week four games for the week 10 spot and moved the week 10 games to week 11 because of Hurricane Ivan. Jay had a game scheduled against Milton (Fla.) in Alabama's week 11.
