OK, all you shooting sports enthusiasts, here's your chance to become a certified 4-H Shooting Sports instructor. A training workshop for adult volunteers interested in working with the 4-H Shooting Sports
program is planned for Feb. 11-13 at the 4-H Center in Columbiana.
The purpose of the workshop is to provide adults who will be instructing youth shooting sports programs with safe and proper instruction techniques. Volunteer leaders will learn how to plan and manage a local 4-H club; ways to promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship and ethical behavior among volunteers and youth; and ways to enhance existing hunter education and 4-H Shooting Sports program training.
Participants may sign up for one of the following disciplines: rifle, archery, muzzleloading or shotgun. They will train in that discipline for the entire workshop. All participants will receive information on 4-H youth development, risk management, and training in safety and
teaching methodology. Participants will also get a chance to practice teach their discipline to others.
All workshop participants must bring eye and ear protection, and comfortable clothes and shoes for outdoor activities. Don't forget rain gear. Any firearms or bows brought will be subject to inspection. Equipment deemed unsuitable for 4-H purposes will not be used. Ammunition will be provided. Because dormitory accommodations are planned, participants should bring their own twin bed linens, blanket, pillow and towels. Those wishing to stay in the hotel instead of the dormitory must pay regular hotel rates. There is also an additional $10 cost for those who want single occupancy for the dormitory.
Thanks to a grant from the Alabama Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, cost of the workshop is only $30 per person and includes training materials, dormitory lodging and all meals on Saturday and Sunday. Make checks payable to the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and send to 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Training, 210 Duncan
Hall, Auburn University, AL 36849-5620 by Feb. 3. Your County Extension office has registration forms and copies of the workshop agenda.
Check-in is Friday, Feb. 11 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Guthrie Lodge.
The training will conclude Sunday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. A box supper will be sent home with each participant. Upon completion of the training, participants will be certified as a 4-H Shooting Sports instructors and may conduct 4-H Shooting Sports programs in Alabama.
