It was probably their biggest game of the season to date. It also turned out to be the most disappointing game of the season for the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks.
JDCC missed out on an opportunity to close in on a top four spot in the Alabama Community College Conference south division standings, which guarantees a first-round home game in the state tournament, when it allowed a season high point total in a 102-79 home-court loss to the Alabama Southern Eagles.
A key five-minute stretch midway through the first half wiped out what had been a promising start for the Warhawks (3-6 in the ACCC and 6-16 overall).
Sparked by a pair of three-pointers and two free throws by Arthur Richardson, the Warhawks had a 17-13 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half.
Over the next five minutes JDCC surrendered three-pointers to Thomas Richardson and Frederick Lewis plus a three-point play and thunderous dunk by Leon Sewell that triggered a 17-1 run and put the Eagles in control with a 30-18 lead.
Yet it was Josh Moore who had the hottest hand for the Eagles. Moore registered 16 of his 28 points in the first half when Alabama Southern stretched that lead to 46-29 by halftime.
The Warhawks recovered to make one strong run at the Eagles early in the second half.
Down 55-36, JDCC reeled off 11 unanswered points and pulled within 55-47 on Richardson's three-pointer with 15:50 left.
Alabama Southern's lead was still in single digits at 60-51 with just under 14 minutes left when the Eagles used a 14-2 run that knocked their lead to a commanding 74-53 margin.
