Buck Quarles was already involved with the W.S. Neal High School track program as an assistant coach when practice began.
What Quarles was not counting on was being elevated to head coach. Yet that is what happened when preceding head coach Shane Smothers took a job at Walker High School just days before the track season was set to begin.
One of Quarles' initial challenges has simply finding the right spots for his athletes.
Speaking of Dunn, he is the lone returning Blue Eagle who placed in last year's Class 3A state meet. Dunn was sixth in the 3200 meters.
The other "strength" area Quarles referred to, the sprints, will probably be led by Mario Daniel and Jonathan Alexander.
Joe Bailey has shown a lot of promise so far in the throws. Bailey had the top overall throw in both the shot put and discus at Friday's T.R. Miller Relays.
Cal Daniel, Brandon Gantt and Allen Dunn will also participate in the throws, especially the shot put. Jeremy Brazile and Shaunathan Williams will also be in the throws, but more

likely in the discus.
Ray Dunn and Biddle may participate in the other throwing event, the javelin.
Quarles is still looking to fill out his jumping lineup.
W.S. Neal has just two girls out this spring.
Joleslia Likely will participate in the long jump, triple jump and possibly the hurdles. Brittani Moton will be in the throws.
