Citizens of Brewton will vote April 19 on whether or not to issue $85,000 in street improvement bonds. The city proposes to use about $40,00 of the bond issue money for street paving and sidewalk projects. The council has also agreed to spend $45,000 on an addition at the Brewton Elementary School.
The East Escambia County Chapter of the Red Cross has gone over its quota for the 1955 Fund Drive and membership drive, becoming one of the first chapters in Alabama to reach both goals.
Winners of awards in the annual Hobby Show at the schools here received awards Tuesday night when the Parent-Teachers Association held its meeting in conjunction with the show. Those winning awards were Brooks Hines, Harry Smith, Sammie and Benny Franklin and William Books from grades one and two; Billy Townsend, Katherine May, Jean Kirkland and Sonny Steele from grades three and four; Larry Ivey, Wayne Garrison and Carolyn Melton from grades five and six; Jo Ann Crenshaw from the tenth grade and June Weaver from the twelfth grade.
For as many years as it has existed, Brewton has watched and listened to the trains going by on the Louisville &Nashville Railroad Co. main line. But a strike by the railroad's employees has changed the sounds of things. Yesterday, the L&N stopped passenger service on the line. No freights have gone through since Monday.
