Defensive miscues have been a problem for most of the season for the T.R. Miller Lady Tigers softball team and that area jumped up and bit them again Monday in an 11-4 road loss to the Jay (Fla.) Lady Royals.
Seven T.R. Miller errors factored into all 11 Jay runs.
After Jay took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, T.R. Miller (6-4) plated all four of its runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.
Taelor Robinson reached on an error, Emily Layton singled and Courtney Krehbiel also reached on an error to produce a run. After Catherine Layton hit into a fielder's choice, Rachel Bostic and Haley Rilling produced RBI singles that put T.R. Miller up 4-1.
Two errors by the Lady Tigers in the bottom of the second inning enabled Jay to cut its deficit to 4-2. Two more T.R Miller errors along with two walks and three singles added up to five Jay runs in the bottom of the third inning and a 7-4 lead for the Lady Royals.
Jay also took advantage of two T.R. Miller errors and mixed in three singles for a four-run rally in the fifth inning that increased the Lady Royals' advantage to 11-4.
T.R. Miller, which beat Jay 4-2 last Thursday, was led by two hits each from Rilling and Terri Lynne Peacock. Leslie Nalty, Cooper, Halie Ellis, Catherine Layton, Emily Layton, Krehbiel and Bostic all had one.
The Lady Tigers, who were slated to play at Flomaton Tuesday, travel to Escambia County Thursday for a 4 p.m. game. That will be T.R. Miller's last game before it starts a 12-day spring break layoff.
