Council's firm stand moves community forward
The Brewton City Council stood firmly in support of the city's long-range plan Tuesday night when it just said "no."
In the long-range plan, it is written that a goal of the city is eventually eliminate all billboards within the city limits, a beautification effort undertaken by many cities with a progressive approach toward what it wants to be.
Despite the high ideals, the wish to be attractive and progressive, it's sometimes difficult to say "no" to nice people who politely ask to have a lease renewed, and offer to increase the lease payment in the process.
But the council, guided by Mayor Ted Jennings, indeed stuck to its guns Tuesday night.
Citing the long-range plan and previous efforts by the city to legally determine its rights to city right-of-way, Jennings stated firmly, "It is my recommendation that we not enter this lease."
We appreciate their firm stand and willingness to move the city forward.
