With three straight losses and six setbacks in their last seven games, the W.S. Neal Blue Eagles needed for somebody to give them a spark.
Freshman Jake Smith was that somebody Thursday, as he powered the Blue Eagles to an 11-10, nine-inning road win over the Flomaton Hurricanes. Smith belted a grand slam to go along with two additional hits and five total RBIs to pace W.S. Neal (4-7) to victory.
Spencer Williamson, Jared Cooper and Justin Smith were also key contributors in the win with two hits each.
Whitney Qualls worked the final three innings for the win. Qualls allowed just one hit and struck out two in his stint. Brandon Douglas started and went the first six frames. Douglas allowed only three hits, but was plagued by eight walks.
The Blue Eagles' junior varsity posted their second win of the season Thursday, as they doubled up Flomaton 10-5.
Aaron Nelson had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Blue Eagles, while Jeffrey Stokes also had two hits.
William Shell went the first four innings for the win, while Casey Butts went the final three frames for a save.
W.S. Neal's varsity enters play at the Gulf Shores Tournament Monday. All of W.S. Neal's four pool games will actually be at Robertsdale High School.
The Blue Eagles play two games Monday, as they face Citronelle at 2:30 p.m. and Southside at 5 p.m. W.S. Neal will play Shoals Christian Tuesday at 10 a.m. and conclude pool play Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Robertsdale.
