Considering they scored only nine runs in four games and yet won three of those games played against Faulkner State over Thursday and Saturday, the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks probably should consider themselves fortunate.
That stretch included Saturday's split at JDCC where the Warhawks won 4-2 in the opener and the Sun Chiefs posted a 2-1 triumph in game two.
Perhaps the biggest opportunity the Warhawks missed was Saturday's second game loss cost JDCC a chance to pull even with Alabama Southern in the Alabama Community College Conference south division standings. The loss also snapped the Warhawks' eight-game winning streak.
Jason Moore scattered seven hits and struck out seven for JDCC (13-5 in the ACCC and 33-10 overall) in the first game win.
The Sun Chiefs touched Moore for a first inning run and a brief 1-0 lead, but the Warhawks got that back in the third inning when Robert Brown doubled and Rusty Harris singled him home.
JDCC scored two go-ahead and what proved to be two decisive runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Charlie Sutton singled and Kyle McPherson was hit by a pitch. Both scored when Robert Brown's single was played.
The Warhawks stretched that lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning when a walk to Sutton, a single by McPherson and a walk to Brown set up a sacrifice fly by Harris.
Faulkner State nearly pulled the game out of the fire in the top of the seventh inning when two errors and Colby Clecker's RBI single cut the lead to 4-2. Moore was able to preserve the win when Brett Barber lined a shot to JDCC shortstop Conklin, who fired it to first baseman Chris Good for a six-three double play.
In game two, JDCC pitcher Robert Brown threw a four-hitter and struck out six but fell victim to his team's mere three-hit attack.
The Warhawks did take a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Harris singled, went to second on an error on a pickoff play, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on R.J. Thompson's groundout.
Faulkner State got that run back and what proved to be the game-winner in the top of
the fourth inning on RBI singles by Ryan Liebe and Dalton Bradley.
JDCC continues ACCC play Thursday when it hosts Bishop State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader The Warhawks will return the favor and play two games at the Mobile school Saturday.
