Alabama author David H. White Jr. and T.R. Miller athletic director and head football coach Jamie Riggs will sign copies of "Leadership Lessons for Life," from 4 p.m. until 5:30 this Wednesday, April 27, at Book and Bean.
In "Leadership Lessons for Life," White, a sportswriter, blends inspirational stories from active and retired Alabama high school football coaches with favorite motivational quotes. The stories are printed in a format that's friendly for both the "at-a-glance" browser and the serious reader.
The book chronicles the passion and legacy of high school football in Alabama. The triumphs of highly successful coaches and teams are documented alongside equally compelling accounts of personal challenges, uphill battles and seemingly unsurmountable odds. The stories illustrate life lessons that hold true on or off the field.
The section titles set the major themes of the book - Believe, Plan, Work, Improve, Persevere. In a concluding chapter, coaches share their personal reflections on their experiences and speak frankly about the lessons they hope their players will carry with them the rest of their lives.
Riggs is among the 45 active and retired Alabama coaches featured in the book.
White grew up in Birmingham and graduated from Vanderbilt University. He began his journalism career in Tuscaloosa, writing for Bama Magazine. He also wrote for the Carolina Blue Magazine and the Durham Morning Herald in North Carolina before returning to Birmingham, where he is a freelance sports and features writer for local magazines and newspapers.
He logged more than 4,500 miles researching his book, interviewing coaches and visiting many of the cities and towns where Alabama High School football history was written.
