Their teams may have been out of the running for the overall championship, but T.R. Miller's Joy McCorvey along with W.S. Neal's Jolesia Likely and Brittani Moton made their presence known at Thursday's Class 3A Sectional Meet held at Brewton Municipal Stadium.
McCorvey accounted for 36 of T.R. Miller's 63 points with two firsts and two runner-up marks. McCorvey used respective blistering times of 12.12 and 25.53 to win the 100 and 200 meter dashes. McCorvey had a second place time of 1:01.7 in the 400 meter dash and a leap of 16-8 in the long jump.
"Joy had an exceptional meet. All her sprint times were very strong. The girl that beat her (Armstead of LAMP) in the 400 posted her time in a separate heat. It might have been a different outcome if they had been in the same heat," T.R. Miller coach Alan Baker said. "Joy's best performance may have been the long jump where she has not had much work this season."
Likely gave the Lady Blue Eagles victories in the high jump at 4-8 and the triple jump at 33-10 1/2. She also had a third place mark in the long jump at 15-9. Meanwhile Moton had runner-up marks in the shot put at 22-3 1/2 and the javelin 69-10 and a third place effort in the discus at 66-1 1/4.
Montgomery Academy edged LAMP 155-144 for the top spot. T.R. Miller's 63 points were good enough for third place, while W.S. Neal's 56 landed it in fourth place.
The top three marks and wild card entries which will be will announced early this week, will compete in the Class 3A state meet Friday and Saturday at Paul Bryant High School in Tuscaloosa.
