Although the T.R. Miller track teams were unable to send retiring coach Alan Baker out with a team state championship, Lady Tigers junior sprinter Joy McCorvey was able to provide him with a couple of individual Class 3A state crowns.
McCorvey ran her way to the state title in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.08. That was nearly a half second faster than runner-up LaQuitta Sashington of Leeds, who finished at 26.53.
McCorvey had even more breathing room in the 400 meter dash where she crossed the finish line in 1:00.32. Her closest competition was Ashville's Mikah Cannat, who had a time of 1:01.8.
McCorvey gave T.R. Miller five more points with a fourth place time of 12.69 in the 100 meter dash.
The only other Lady Tiger to score at the state meet was junior Jasmine Sanford.
Sanford, who had set the state record in the triple jump the last two years, settled for a third place leap of 34-5 1/2. She also lost her claim to the state record in that event, as Leeds' Danielle Threatt broke her mark of 36-4 1/2 with a first place leap of 36-5.
T.R. Miller finished in sixth place in the team standings with 31 points. Leeds won the state title with 139.
W.S. Neal finished in a tie for 24th place with four points. All four points came from Jolesia Likely's fifth place mark in the triple jump of 33-4 1/2.
