The Brewton City School System is collaborating with Southwest Alabama Mental Health and the Brewton Area YMCA to offer a special program to children in third through sixth grades who are potentially at risk.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Baxter Baker, who wrote the grant to secure funding for the project, said the 60 students who participate will spend the academic portions of their days improving reading schools and doing art and enrichment activities to enhance those skills. While at the YMCA, they'll participate in a number of activities, including swimming lessons, Baker said. They'll also learn archery skills and have some free time, he said.
Mental health will work on character education, he said, and will use some of the research-based drug and alcohol prevention materials.
Baker said the most students lose some skills during the summer months.
The six-week program will be housed at the Brewton Middle School.
