Congratulations to the Brewton Middle School students who are members of the Science Olympiad team and their coaches, Carrie Brown, Heather Cook, Cindy Brittain, and Vanessa Shelburne on their recent success at the national competition in Illinois.
The team ranked 35 out of 60 participating teams, and two students, Mabry cook and Malcolm McMillan, placed fifth in their event.
That's no small feat for a relatively-small school from a relatively-small town.
Brewton Middle School's Science Olympiad team is totally extra-curricular; that is, team members prepare for and participate in events outside of school hours. Their coaches split a $500 stipend four ways. However, the youngsters compete against many schools in which Science Olympiad preparation is part of every school day.
Earning a berth in the national competition was a great honor for these student; making such a good showing on the first national trip was even better.
We congratulate these smart young men and young women, as well as their coaches, on their success.
