County board ups pay for substitutes

Substitute teaching in the Escambia County School System got a little bit more rewarding Thursday when the county Board of Education approved a new salary matrix.
In addition to the six percent pay increases mandated for educators by the state legislature, the board upped substitute teacher pay to $70 per day for certified teachers and $50 per day to non-certified teachers. In addition, substitute teachers to substitute for 10 days or more will receive $75 or $55 per day, depending upon their certification.
Board member Cereal Daniel expressed concern for support personnel.
Powell said he hopes to address it when the board adopts a new salary matrix next June.
He said the board will have a better idea by December of what it may be able to do to improve the circumstances. The board receives most of its tax revenues in December and January.
