Gov. Bob Riley has ordered lane changes on I-65 beginning early Saturday morning to expedite evacuation of the Gulf Coast area as Hurricane Dennis approaches
The interstate will be closed to southbound traffic beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday, and law enforcement personnel will begin preparations for converting all four lanes to northbound traffic. By 8 a.m. the first cars in Baldwin County will enter the crossover point into the northbound lanes. The lane reversal will continue until around 5 p.m., when officials plan to begin closing the crossover point so state workers can be off the interstate by nightfall. Motorists will be merged back into the proper lanes in Montgomery, where they can continue to their final evacuation destinations on I-65, I-85 or other state and local routes.
