Mrs. Mattie Pearl Slay, 97, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, in Nokomis. She was a native of Marengo County and had been a resident of Atmore for 93 years. She was a member of Pine Level Primitive Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Slay Sr.; two sons, Alvin Slay Jr. and Roy Slay; a daughter, Genevieve Slay; four brothers, Archie James, Dennis James, Herman James and Arthur James; and one sister, Frances Lambert.
She is survived by a son, Norman Slay of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Thelma Albert of Atmore; a brother, Alvin James of Warner Robbins, Ga.; three sisters, Alice Cochran of Atmore, Sybil Balwin of Riverside, Calif. and Louise Thomley of Macon, Ga., nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and a special friend, Mildred Jones of Atmore.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16, at 10 a.m. at the Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Elder Jim Sanders officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery with Eastside Chapel Funeral Home directing.
