The new school year is right around the corner and the countdown is on.
Local department store shelves are filling up with school supplies and First Baptist Church is leading a program to put those supplies in the backpacks of children whose parents can't afford them.
The church collects supplies and donations to go toward buying school uniforms, socks, shoes and undergarments for children in kindergarten through the sixth grade, as well as some students in high school.
They then work with Hope Place to identify needy families with students who can benefit from the program.
This is a great program that helps many youngsters start the school year off right. We hope you'll consider packing a backpack for a c hild in need.
Donations to Back-a-Backpack can be dropped in specially-marked boxes outside of the church sanctuary located on Belleville Avenue.
