Ask Brewton area residents what's good about the community, and most will include on their list "a great YMCA."
The YMCA is improving its already-great contributions to our community with its Shape-Up program, a free program designed to help members and non-members achieve their fitness goals.
Participants weigh in once each week for only the cost of the effort it takes for them to keep food diaries. The accountability encourages participants to stick to their weight-loss goals.
While some participants wish only to lose a few pounds or keep themselves from gaining weight, others are tackling weight problems that are potential health problems.
The YMCA has added a second free program to enhance the first. A walking program is offered on Monday evenings and is followed by a toning class. Like Shape-Up, the program is open at no charge to both YMCA members and non-members.
These are great programs for our community. We salute Janet Peterman, the personal trainer who dreamed this program up, Liz Knowles, who's leading the walking effoert, and their co-workers at the YMCA for all they're doing to keep Brewton healthy in mind, body and spirit.
