Rev. Joseph Franklin Horst, 67, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at a Pensacola hospital. He was a native of Dayton, Va., and a resident of Byrneville since 1967. He was pastor of the Byrneville Mennonite Church, owner of Horst Paper Hanging Company, State Coordinator for the Mennonite Disaster Service and treasurer for the Gulf Coast District of Mennonite Churches. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Horst.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Martha Horst of Bryneville; his father, Lloyd Horst of Dayton, Va.; two sons, Kenneth (Ann) Horst of Tuscaloosa, and Stanley (Debbie) Horst of Lyndhurst, Va.; two daughters, Noreen Horst of Byrneville and Norma (Lyndon) Halteman of Walnut Hill, Fla.; four brothers, James Horst of Weyers Cave, Va., Amos Horst of Harrisonburg, Va., Enos Horst of Franklin, W.V., and Reuben Horst of Dayton, Va.; two sisters, Rachel Schrodt of Dayton, Va., and Anna Miller of Middlebury, Tenn., and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Mennonite Christian Fellowship Church with Bishop J.D. Landis and the Rev. James Weber officiating. Graveside services followed at Byrneville Cemetery with Eastside Chapel Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Brett Horst, Conrad Horst, Jeremy Halteman, Marvin Bender, Jesse Rheam, Jerry Doran, John Ray Doran and Darriell Hughes. Honorary Pallbearers were James Comalander, David Comalander, Buddy Walston and Paul Stevanus.
