A group of local law enforcement officers volunteered their time in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to give other law enforcement officers a break.
Joining McNight and Smith were Flomaton Police Chief Mik Lambert, Jeff Beasley of the Sheriff's Department, Jason Gleaton from the district attorney's office and Jimmy Jones from the Humane Society.
Smith returned to Escambia County after one day to deal with problems caused by gas lines, but the others in the group stayed, and actually pulled a shift for the Dauphin Island Police Department, which was in a similar situation, on their way home.
