By By Lydia Grimes – Forgotten Trails
This is Norvelle lineage as far as I have been able to figure it out. I want to tell you a little bit about the background of Norvelle Robertson and will get around to the Robertson part later.
Thomas Norvelle was born 1613 in Winsham, Somerset, England and died in Virginia. He was married Mary Frye (1618), the daughter of William Frye. They had at least two children, Mary Norvelle (1639) and George Norvelle (1640-1660/65).
George Norvelle (1640) married Lydia Perkins (1641-1730), daughter of Nicholas Perkins and Mary Burtonin. They had at least two children, George Norvelle (1658-1686) and Mary Norvelle (1659).
George Norvelle (1658) married a Bullock, daughter of Captain Hugh Bullock about 1673 in James City, Va. They had a son Hugh Norvelle (1674-1716) who married Sarah (1678) in 1699 in James City and had the following children, George Norvelle (1700-1757), Elizabeth Norvelle (abt. 1700), Sarah Norvelle (1702), Hugh Norvelle (1704-10 Oct. 1759) and William Norvelle (1714-22 Nov. 1802).
George Norvelle (1700-1757) married in 1720 in Hanover, Henrico County, Va. to Sarah (1704) and they had the following children, George Norvelle (1722), James Norvelle (1723), John Norvelle (1724) and Sarah Norvelle (9 Sept. 1730-7 Sept. 1812). From one source I found that this George lived in St. Paul's Parish about 12 miles from Richmond. The Vestry Book (1706-1786) notes that he was a landowner as early as 1733. The 1743 processioning records state: &#8220The lands of George Norvelle abut the lands of Isaac Winston.”
Sarah Norvelle married Jeffery Robertson Jr. in about 1757 in Henrico County, Va. Jeffery Robertson (17 Jan. 1737 in Chesterfield County, Va.-2 Feb. 1827 in Buckingham County, Va. He was the son of Jeffery Robertson Sr. and Judith Tanner Mills. His obituary published in the Richmond Enquirer 17 April 1827, states that he died at the home of his daughter, Rhoda Gannaway. Jeffery Robertson and Sarah Norvelle had four children.
Rhoda Robertson (30 Sept. 1760-12 Oct. 1852 in St. Charles, Mo.) married 22 Sept. 1779, Gregory Gannaway in Richmond, Va.
Judith Robertson (abt. 1761 in Chesterfield County, Va.-31 March 1854 in Adair County, Ken.) married 16 Nov. 1780, David Winniford, son of George Winniford.
Norvell E. Robertson (22 May 1765 in Cumberland County, Va.-16 Sept. 1855 in Covington County, Miss.) married 7 July 1791 in Bedford, Ga. to Sarah Powell, daughter of Martha Powell.
Now, as to the family of Robertson
